Hartman: Gophers have enough talent to make tournament run

  • Article by: SID HARTMAN , Star Tribune
  • Updated: March 17, 2013 - 11:33 PM

Now that the Gophers are fortunate enough to have been selected to play in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, there is no reason they can’t advance if they play like they did in beating Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan State. The 11th-seeded Gophers face UCLA, the sixth seed in the South Region, in Austin, Texas, on Friday.

Lucia was man enough to bring back his previous assistant coach back to be his associate head coach and turned the program around. Do you think Tubby is willing to do the same?

tvclemsonMar. 17, 1310:36 PM

Here's a difference. Lucia at MN won two national championships and had numerous conference championships. How many of those has Tony won at MN? (Hint its between -1 and 1)

Sid just listed 6 to 7 "if's" depending how you want to count them for the Gophers to advance! If if's and but's were candy and nuts every day would be Christmas!

"there is no reason they can’t advance if they play like they did in beating Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan State.".."This team has to quit turning the ball over and making stupid mistakes and return to the form it had when it was 15-1".. You mean go back to the starters that went 15-1 and to the players that played together in those wins - that played defense first and offense second - go back to what made them a force and got the top ten rank?.. I agree, yes - put Eliason back in with the four starters, except don't sit Mbakwe for Eliason as MN did back then - Coleman, while otherwise a very talented player, has a problem with defense that has not worked out this year. Use Coleman as a bench force - in at small to put up a dozen points and change tempo... Back to defense first - get Eliason in to protect Mbakwe from attacks-to-foul and give Mbakwe more freedom to play, and to have height at the basket. The others will all, to a man, relax and play a much better game - as they have every game they played together for more than 7-8 minutes.

Reality check. No metion anywhere in this article that the Gophers are 5-11 in their last six games and Tubby is 0-6 in his last 6 NCAA playoff games???

FCSandvikMar. 18, 13 7:57 AM

Tubby, shorten the rotation, 7 a good number. Start Eliason yes.

kikikutterMar. 18, 13 7:59 AM

Come on Tubby, win me back. Big opportunity to gain some favor.

hitch22Mar. 18, 13 7:59 AM

I will never understand Sid's logic... If the Gophers are so talented then why did they lose in the first round of the Big 10 tourney? Has Sid ever ripped a U of M team or it's coach?

guth54Mar. 18, 13 8:01 AM

I'm with Sid. The Gophers are just passing time playing 6 NCAA tournament games. They are going straight to the Awards Banquet as this 2013 NCAA Basketball Champions! All you so called 'experts' can doubt us, but you'll see. When Tubby is accepting the "Coach of the Year" award, all you nay sayers will be eating crow. Tell it like it is, Sid!

All they need is Trey Burke and/or Carmelo Anthony.
