In this new pope, U.S. Catholics have a leader who defies easy categories: He has lived simply in a Buenos Aires apartment, often riding public transit among fellow Argentines who know him as “Father Jorge.”

I'm so tired of hearing about how all these right-wing religious types (including the new pope) are so very concerned about the poor, but continue to oppose birth control, abortion, and other measures that would actually decrease the number of poor and desperate people in the world. I don't know why anybody listens to these so-called authority figures anymore.

The oh so tired refrain of blaming republicans for irresponsibility. The progressives would have 20% unemployment if the poverty industry went under due to conservative ideals of getting people to work at something rather than just collecting a measly, de- humanizing welfare check. The progressives need a large population of those living, and staying in poverty to stay in power.

From the article: "[The former Fr. Jorge, now Pope Francis] has forcefully opposed abortion, euthanasia, same-sex marriage and adoptions by gays, but also taught deep respect for gays and lesbians as children of God." How does it show deep respect for God's creation (which has always included gays and lesbians) to discriminate against gays and lesbians by denying them the human right to marry and to adopt children? Rep. Steve Simon's framed the debate in these eloquent words, "How many more gay people does God have to create before we ask ourselves whether or not God Actually wants them around?"
