Gophers' poor rebounding set up Illinois' last charge

CHICAGO – Sifting through what transpired in the final three minutes against Illinois on Thursday, Gophers coach Tubby Smith knew his team wasted chances.

No way Tubby can be blamed for a season long failure to get the ball in bounds, culminated by a couple of failed attempts at the end of this game. I mean, my sixth grade girls basketball team took at least two long, difficult practices to learn 4 or 5 inbounds plays that worked well.

Can't inbound the ball, afraid to make quick passes, can't create off the dribble, don't know how to run the pick and roll, no post offense, no one wants to shoot until the shot clock runs down, no offense against a zone. These are the reasons why the Gophers need a new and better coach. Pursue S. Smart.

Tubby ball - if you need ball control in a close game, put in the short people to rebound. Illinois got 3 offensive rebounds against his short crew at the end - who would have guessed? .. Tubby ball - If you absolutely positively need to get an in-bounds pass in, don't do what every top 50 coach in the country does and put in your tallest and longest 15 feet straight in off the defender to be a pick for the cutters and/or take a high pass - instead, fake everybody out and play the short crew...

"No way Tubby can be blamed for a season long failure to get the ball in bounds"... Who else? He is the coach... And - can your 6th grade team get the ball in if you put out your short average speed girls against the opponents quick tall girls - and use your new play you just made up?

Statistically speaking, the Gophs did what they should have done to win the game (with the huge exception of turnovers). But even if you shoot better, shoot 3s better, out-rebound, etc., you still can't win against a quality opponent with only three players (and solid D from a sub) making contributions. Both Rodney Williams and Joe Coleman didn't even show up. Rodney had TWO rebounds, TWO!! Coleman creates a turnover taking the ball out of bounds (they did it again later in the game). Both resulted in Illini scores. Please notice Dre, that even good point guards GO GET THE BALL on an in-bound situation. Andre runs away from the passer into the backcourt. Screen for your best player, Tubby -- and get the ball to Andre. Don't spread the floor and expect to pass over the top and away from the basket when you have just a few seconds to shoot. And Andre -- GO GET THE BALL. Fake, and GO AT THE PASSER if the coach doesn't have the sense to set a screen (or two) for you. If you WANT THE BALL, it's almost impossible to keep if from you without getting fouled. If you run away from the passer -- then Austin or (horror) the other Andre has to take the in-bounds pass and there's no way to get off a quality shot because neither can create off the dribble. Look how Paul did it. He wanted the ball, got the ball, drove to where he had a quality shot, took the shot, and won the game. Also notice, we didn't bother to double him, we let him control the tempo and didn't stop his momentum toward the goal. Basic offensive and defensive strategy, folks. And it cost us (again).
