Anderson: Waiting eagerly for sap to flow

  • Article by: DENNIS ANDERSON , Star Tribune

It’s a vulnerable time for those who cook syrup, and less expensive to ponder matters near home than to visit a supply store.

Get the snow shoes out Dennis, and pack a trail to all the trees as if you were gathering using those tracks. Make it wide enough for the ATV. That path will melt quicker as it now has vertical walls for the sun to reflect off of. Before ya know it, that path will be exposed ground. If Paul Douglas is anywhere near right, we ain't gonna get any liquid gold for another 10 days to 2 weeks in our Wealthwood Sugarbush. Not historically unusual though. How sweet it is...

You shouldn't be allowed to harvest maple syrup since you have money and can afford to buy it.

Great article Mr. Anderson. One of the rituals of spring and part of our great American outdoor heritage. We use Minnesota processed Maple Syrup when smoking fish, ribs, brisket, pulled pork and in all our wild game sausage making instead of regular sugar. Not to mention in our Minnesota Bluberry and Buttermilk pancakes of course!

I snowshoed around my 36 Acre maple forest in Meeker County (west of the metro 45-miles) today, then looked at the weather forcast and and I'm thinking we won't see much sap flowing until about April Fools Day. Love doing it, lots of work and look foreward to it every year.

Nobody hugs trees more heartily than the maple syrup makers. Take it from me...I've been doing it since 1972.

sj just like Dr. King and Rosa Parks! Shutting down the evil regime. That's so funny to the real world! You don't understand Indian Law, nor the federal relationship put in place. Be netting in late April, early May, it's all good.

Back in the day, my buddy Hoppy and me had the smart idea to supplement our income with a maple syrup operation. We were doing all right until the night I let Hoppy cook the sap all alone and he passed out because of one too many Blatz's and he overcooked the sap into a fine black powder. We were just lucky he didn't burn down the neighbor's shed we had kinda hijacked for our own use.
