Souhan: Healthy Morneau knows he could be cornerstone or trading chip

Justin Morneau is finally healthy, which means he could again be a cornerstone of the Twins’ offense — or trade bait if the team isn’t contending.

I'd hate to see him leave but a really good shortstop or another top pitching prospect would ease the blow a bit. Sign him to an extension now.

I also hate to see Morneau go. I like the M&M boys reference and all that goes with it. I have the feeling that Morneau will have a monster first half. And TR would be stupid not to trade him at the deadline. Since 2008, Justin has fallen off dramatically after the all-star break. Odds are that may happen this year as well. So if we keep him after the trade deadline - TR should offer less than market value as a home town discount

" --- or trade bait if the team isn’t contending." Sooooooooo, trade bait it is.

I hope that Morneau stays healthy and is productive. In addition, I hope that he stays here in MN, as our sports teams do not need anymore losses.

time to go when he is healthy and worth something. we need to get rid of the big contracts of both he and mauer. bring on some healthy younger players.

Love the guy, but if he is raking at the deadline, he needs to be traded for a good infield prospect, hopefully a shortstop who can hit.

Ya, trade him.....and who is gonna play first base????? Fill the shortstop position and you have a bigger hole at first base..... absolutely no sense at all......Besides, they had the shortstop position filled for the next 5-7 years with JJ Hardy.....stupidest move of the last 5 years..........

A 90 plus loss team can't have two players making nearly 50% of the payroll the Pohlads are willing to part with, especially when they both beak down frequently. Morneaua is a good guy and a good citizen, but the reality of the situation is, rthey need an "A' list pitcher and a shortstop. Until that happens they are a last place team for sure. Trade him or sign him for far less guaranteed and some incentives.

From everything I've read about Justin, he's a good guy and I hope he gets his wish to continue playing for a Twins team that's winning. That said, the Twins cannot afford to rule out trading him if they're offered enough. I would not trade a healthy, productive Morneau for an infield prospect. I might trade him for two players, one of whom is a prospect and one who could contribute to the team immediately, or for two really solid prospects. As for filling the hole at first base: the easiest solution would be to move Parmalee in from the outfield and replace him with somebody like Benson.

How about this, sign Morneau at a reasonable price and then open you pocket book for a change (no pun intended) and sign a decent pitcher or 2.
