As someone who tracks this data a little more scrupulously, I can tell you that there are FAR more than 2,000 units planned/under construction in the downtown area, and even in the CBD (sub-area of greater "downtown"). The total number of proposed/approved/UC units in the CBD alone is ~2,300. For greater downtown, it's 4,500 (or 5,500 if you include St. Anthony Main as part of "downtown"). And when you include Uptown, the Hiawatha Corridor, etc., the City of Minneapolis is looking at something closer to 10,000 or 11,000 total multi-family units in the pipeline! Exciting times if you are an urbanist and/or like to see Minneapolis prosper!

Thanks for writing the article. Much appreciated. I want to point out what appears to be an inaccuracy in the following sentence from the article: "Still, it has been decades since downtown has had any significant new rental construction, let alone a new apartment tower, and such projects will help advance the Downtown Council’s goal of doubling downtown’s population by 2025." The Carlyle, which is an apartment building - but not a rental apartment building - in downtown Minneapolis was completed in 2007, which was six years ago. It has 41 floors, which most people would consider a tower. Hence, there has been an apartment tower built in downtown Minneapolis in the last six years.
