This TSA nonsense is mostly security theatre anyway. It deters simpletons and crazy people, and the inconvenience assures most casual travelers that they are being protected. In that way, it's a good thing. After 9/11, so many Americans had been so oblivious to the real dangers in the world that they were on the verge of hysterical breakdown, so a paternalistic, if clownish, show of authoritarianism was very reassuring to many people.

But in terms of actual security, reinforcing the cockpit doors, and inspecting boarding passes and identification more closely were the only actual improvements to security. The liquids thing is one of the biggest jokes. A British scientific publication showed that it is impossible for liquids to be used as an explosive in an air travel scenario.

The absurd and arbitrary rules show that those in charge know full well it's all theatre. As does the abysmal quality and training of TSA personnel. Since it's all for show anyway, it doesn't matter, and the authorities know it.

Still, it would be nice if they could find their own test bombs during screenings.
