Cool pictures. But at a cost of 2.5 billion to go to Mars can anyone explain to a novice why finding out if there was once life on Mars is that important. Just asking.

Hecuba- I'm sure that Columbus had a good answer for his exploration, but it's a legitimate question. Why are we using funds on this project? What will we learn from this that will advance society, beyond finding my ancestors.
