This is an intriguing article to me as my husband and I are expecting our first child this summer. As one of the tech savvy patients they discussed in this article, I crave more of a hybrid experience of using online communication tools and face-to-face (not via skype) exams. I’m curious about the lack of urine analysis, physical exam and occasional bloodwork – are these steps excluded from this study or how are they integrated?

No way! I am nearing the end of my 2nd pregnancy and would NEVER take part in something like this. The intimacy I have with my doctor is something I relish. She's there to hold my hand and talk me through any and all questions I have. In addition, being in direct contact with your doctor assures she may see something, i.e. swollen feet or other tell-tale signs of Pre-Eclampsia, that likely would be missed via an iPhone contact. Having a baby is an exciting, yet terrifying time, and I don't like the "drive-thru" nature of this trial.

Any which way to save a buck! This is not about medicine, rather, it is about looking for future cost cutting measures. This is health care at its worst. Mayo Clinic is more about assembly line health care and moving away from the importance of the doctor/patient relationship.
