Receivers top Vikings' free-agent wish list

The Vikings’ passing game needs lots of help, but their run-first offense may be uninviting to the elite free-agent receivers.

Dan, What everyone seems to be forgetting is Ponder had 59 yards against Green Bay in GB and had only 1 reception to a receiver at the 56:00 minute mark with two picks. I guess that warrants him being sharpied into the starting line-up??

The main reason why NO top flight free agents in the prime of their careers come to play for the vikings is that they know they will never win a Super Bowl ring. If you don't believe me just look at any free agent that has ever come here during the 53 year (and counting) history of this franchise and you will see that none of them has ever won a Super Bowl / World Championship. The second reason why NO top flight wide reciever will come here or be signed is that the viking's starting QB, Christian Ponder, is not capable of getting them the ball unless they are a TE. Worse yet,is the viking's back-up QB Joe Webb who, despite being in the league for three years is by far an even poorer passer who still cannot read a defense and who's only game is to fake a pass or hand-off and take off running. This works once or twice for him during the span of an entire game but his one dimensional game gets shut down immediately like he has in every game he has ever started and most recently the last viking game of last season in GB. This club is in big trouble this upcoming season.

I am puzzled as to why the Vikes are "only" about $17million under the salary cap? Besides AD and Jared Allen, what other player has a mega-bucks contract? The Vikes got rid of the aging vets with the big contracts in the past 2 years and now have one of the youngest teams in the NFL. For the Vikes to improve on last year, they would need Harvin to stay AND sign at least one top flight FA WR but yet we are told the best we can expect is sign Harvin and no money for anyone else or trade Harvin and sign a Wallace type player. We had Harvin last year and the lack of depth at WR was their undoing so I don't see how we can expect them to improve this year at WR.

@purplegoon - With all due respect, you're not fooling anyone by changing screen names. The same one that said they'd be worse than the 3-13 debacle. The same one who predicted losses in all four games to end the year. The same one who thinks the past has anything to do with the future, as if 1977 or 1985 have anything to do with now. The same old, same old. Not working to well for ya, hm? ;)

Greg Jennings! Please!!!!!!!!!

furheadxMar. 9, 13 3:18 AM

is that 'run first' or 'you're going to be so open'

Greg Jennings isn't coming here. I wish we could keep in GB. He's been where passing is a premium and he excelled at catching balls.. Favre and Rodgers were his 2 QB's. Ponder, the Vikes, and $10-12 Million? I think not.

If the Vikings offer more money than other teams they can have who they want. Money talks louder than anything to most players these days. The point that I find odd that nobody is really mentioning is that Jared Allen and Kevin Williams will likely have to restructure their contracts to stay with the team this coming season. So one way or another, The Vikings will have at least another 8 million or so in cap room. The Vikes need to find out if Ponder is going to be the answer or not, and the only way to do that is by giving him a few weapons to throw the ball to. Imho, It is very likely that they will be in the mix to sign one of the top WR's in free agency

I still don't understand why they are so afraid to make Ponder compete for the starting job. Do they really think they are going to get Grossman, Leinart, or any of the other experienced QB's listed to come in and agree to be prepared to play in case Ponder gets hurt but in the meantime don't compete for the starting job in practice because it might upset Christian? By nature these are very competitive people and they're supposed to turn that off? I wouldn't even want that on my team. I would want every player on the roster to be a fierce competitor, it sets the tone and carries over into games. Good luck finding your backup QB who agrees to be a weenie.

Peterson had a terrific 2012. Everything went right for him. But, despite the ballyhoo, to expect similar production from AP again is not a good bet. Defenses get 8 months to develop new game plans against him, and we can all pull another bead onto the rosary of health for him. And if AP goes down, or his production is not 2012-like, what are our offensive options? Still unproven. Despite a nice, long completion to Wright against the Packers in the December dome win, his 2012 season provides not an ounce of footage that would describe him as a QB with an NFL arm. What good does it do to use a high draft pick on a WR, or spend big bucks on a high-profile free agent WR if we have a sandlot QB? All the talk of the great last 4 games isn't around IF AP doen't have those great games. Take AP out of those last 4 games and we lose all four. Bolster the defense with the first two picks. Grab another QB reach in the 3rd. Grab two more WR in the next rounds and maybe another guard.
