Catch and release? Minneapolis rethinks stray cat approach

City Council Member Cam Gordon wants to scrap the catch and euthanize program in favor of a trap, neuter- or spay-and-release approach, similar to what St. Paul does, saying it is more humane and effective in controlling the stray cat population.

We have enough stray and roaming cats in Minneapolis as it is. Let's not put more back out onto the streets. I regularly have to chase them away from our bird feeders – tall fences are no hindrance. Worse is neighbors who let their cats roam –  and do their business in other people's yards. Cats kill between 1 and 3 BILLION birds every year in the United States. Enough said.

Maybe if these people saw the MILLIONS of birds these cats are killing every year in the US they would think differently. They are a plague to the bird population. I've even seen them kill Grouse.

I love animals and have rescued /adopted my share. I live in the country, and I see animals dumped off by people unable or unwilling to care for them roaming my farm from time to time. When an animal is hungry long enough, it will become feral. Fact of life. Coyotes take care of most of the feral cats around here. I can't imagine that's a pleasant end.

Why not trap, neuter and declaw their front paws? That would prevent feral cats from hunting as well as they normally would. It would also reduce their ability to infect people (puffy cat scratches are actually infectious). Now, as for simply killing the feral cats, the difficulty is that people find out about this, and start feeding instead of turning in cats, not realizing the damage those cats are doing, as well as the more you feed them, the more they reproduce.

We need to vet pet adoptions better. At many large shelters like the one in Golden Valley, returning your cat means that its fate will be death. We need to stop the cycle of mass killings (sometimes by gas chamber) and then mass cremations. What is going on at these shelters is very similar to the sick things that were going on Germany during the 30s and 40s. The cats are not the problem, its people.

$50 to $100, That is crazy. Open season on them. If still a problem, $5 $10 bounty, problem solved,

Most feral cats have a short miserable life, during that time they kill native animals and they are not native to Minnesota, Like the Carp the feral cat is displacing native species and changing the local ecosystem. People, look at it from a different perspective, to release a non-native species to fend for itsself in the wild to wreak death and distruction on native animals is a gutless solution to a nasty problem by people who are selfish and very short-sighted. If it costs $100 to humanely kill a feral cat, then we need to open it up to bids, I bet it will drop to $10

I love cats as much as any cat lover, but they are an invasive species when let out to roam and hunt.

One needs to stop thinking that a feral cat is merely merely grandmaw's cute little kitty out for a stint in the wild. They're not. They are what nature intended them to be: killing machines that reproduce like rabbits. They also carry diseases (rabies, anyone?). Goofball ideas such as rounding them up, neutering them and releasing them is mindless feelgoodism at its worst. Wanna control them? Then put a bounty on them. "X" dollars per cat. It won't take care of all of them but it would reduce the number of the pests significantly.
