All violent crime has dropped and most experts don't really know why. Violence against women may have dropped at a slower rate. From an article in the New York Times: "The odds of being murdered or robbed are now less than half of what they were in the early 1990s, when violent crime peaked in the United States."
I think it's mostly from aging demographics.
There is no real proof that VAWA has had any effect on the rate of violence.
