Dozier turns 5 double plays as Twins defeat St. Louis 7-0

JUPITER, FLA. – For Brian Dozier, the Twins’ 7-0 victory over St. Louis on Monday was practically a fielding drill. First, he spends batting practice with Ron Gardenhire, making an adjustment to his footwork around the bag. Then he puts it into action during the game — five times.

Why do I think the Twins are going to surprise some people this year. Am I being to optimistic?

matthewJames; you are being optimistic, but this is the time of year it is OK to be optimistic! I agree with you that they are going to surprise this year. If the SP are better, I think the defense and offense will be better. I look for Morneau to have a better year at the plate because he is finally 100% healthy. I also think that Florimon at SS can make all the plays and then some. If Dozier takes the 2B job, then I think the middle infield will be better this year. Even if Carroll is the starting 2b, the middle infield defense will be better. I also think that whoever takes over in CF will replace Span defensively. I wish they would trade Doumit to open the DH spot for Willingham. That would improve the outfield defense as well. I look for over 80 wins this year. That might put them in the hunt for a wild card. But KC is better, Cleveland is better, and the Tigers did not get worse with Martinez back to health.

Pitching of course will be a concern. There are a lot of "ifs" on this team, IF Mauer and Morneau can stay healthy, IF Plouffe can play everyday, reduce his errors and send he ball into the beachers, IF Scott Diamond can repeat last year and some of the other "kids" step up and throw well, IF Parmalee can stay up in the bigs all year, and launch some balls into the bleachers. PREDICTION... I put the Twins on a 80-82 season. We will NOT be as bad as the past two years.

Nice job in all 3 phases against the Cardinals yesterday. Hopefully Dozier will fill the 2nd-base hole. I noticed that none of the people who posted in yesterday's blog about wanting to fire Gardenhire after Sunday's loss to the Rays are posting today.

I would bet my house that the Twins go over on the over/under in Vegas. 64 1/2? They will beat that by 20 wins.
