What is really sad is that 36/35W was supposed to go north of Downtown and hook up with 94 around the Lowery/Camden area. The state had purchased all the land and built the bridge pillars before they gave into the "Oh we don't need that" in the 70's. You would have had a road on the north side and south side and not so much craziness in the tunnel. Take out a map and look at it someday-it would have been great!

What does a discussion of 36/35W going through Minneapolis have to do with this article? This project is in Maplewood miles from Minneapolis. The 1970s era project that was canceled was I335. It was an additional freeway and not a replacement for I35W or Hwy 36. There is still evidence of grading done for ramps to/from I335 along I35W.

The article fails to mention that MNDOT plans to close Hwy 36 completely for two months as part of the project. The article is mostly about the open house, but it talked a lot baout the project and this is a big omission. I suspect there will be a lot of angry local residents at the open house.

This project illustrates all that's wrong with Minnesota's municipal consent law. The city wouldn't let than add a pair of stoplights on US 61, so now there will be nasty weaves on MN 36 between US 61 and English street. I-335 as originally planned had two problems; it would tear up a lot of park land, including Nicollet Island, and there were no ramps to north I-94 so it wouldn't have done a meaningful job of relieving traffic in the Lowry Tunnel. Although I'm normally strongly in favor of building lots of huge, wide, freeways, I agree it this one wasn't worth it based on the proposed design and routing.
