There are not 40,000 priests in the United States who could be the president of St. Thomas. The position requires an outstanding record of experience in academic leadership in a university. The total number of Roman Catholic priests in the U.S. is about 40,000. There's simply no way that they're all qualified for this role.

Nice catch by luxaeterna--folks just throwing numbers around. Beancounters are in charge almost everywhere--healthcare, sports, obviously busniness, why not education (seems we could use some decent accounting-$153,000 dollars for 1 room for 1 disruptive student- a beancounter wouldn't have allowed that!

Since when did someone's gender become a "qualification"? Honestly.

Good luck to the new Pres. I'm just glad that the Arch-Bishop wasn't allowed to influence the decision. Go Tommies and bring home another D3 Championship!

Of course not all 40,000 U.S. priests are qualified to be the UST president. There are, however, plenty of priests with extensive education backgrounds with multiple graduate degrees or Ph.Ds, management and fund-raising experience.

Just to set the stage, I am a practising Catholic who was educated by nuns. Once again, the men in the Catholic church think they are the only ones able to think! I too am a UST alum (masters degree)and am pleased that the best candidate was selected based on capabilities and not titles. Now if we could only look at 100% of the Catholic population (not just men) for the papacy.
