Minnesota drivers have few options for claiming pothole bills

Musician Steve Humerickhouse was on his way to rehearsal at Concordia College in St. Paul last week. He hit a sour note on the way when he plunged his 2013 KIA Optima — a vehicle he’d owned for just two weeks and driven just 195 miles — into a giant pothole on the ramp from Franklin Avenue to eastbound Interstate 94 in Minneapolis.

I was lucky. New construction in the North Loop left a dangerous bump on 2nd. They were in a hurry to go home on a Friday I expect. I bottomed out and cracked my oil pan. I went right to the construction company foreman on Monday morning and reported it and got a $900 bill paid by their insurance.

One would be hard pressed to expect any kind of payment for damage they think was caused by road whatever damage, One does have to drive accordingly for the road conditions. What the local/state, road repair crews need to do is do quality repairs. Coming along and throwing a few shovels full of asphalt in a hole filled with water is not a fix. The hole needs to be cleaned out and square cut and then filled with hot mix. Long term/quality repairs are the proper way to do a good job.

Minneapolis is terrible about fixing potholes. Installing golden fountains- good. Fixing aging and crumbling streets - poor.

Some Minneapolis streets have more pothole patch material then original pavement... The potholes in March/April are enough of an incentive to take the express bus in over driving just to save my car.

Take the checkbook away from the U of M and we can prolly re-pave every road in the Metro.

Hot patch asphalt is not yet available so they have to use the next best thing.

Interesting read as I nearly hit that exact pothole on Franklin/94 and told my wife how lucky i was to have just grazed it. There were 6 cars on the side of the road between the exit and Huron.
