If you need to bring a gun to the library to feel safe you should probably stay home, barricade the doors and start reading e-books. This whole "I can legally carry and need to protect myself" has gone a bit too far.

Get Crazy, get real. It isn't about feeling safe or unsafe, it is about being prepared. Drive much without a spare tire?

Nah, getcrazy, it's not about fear in the library. It's about what to do with it, when you already have it with you, and you go to the library. Quit projecting onto others your personal disdain, distrust, insecurities, and fears. Relax. The person with a permit isn't a problem. Worry about the person who doesn't have a permit or can't qualify for one.

Why is this a "news story" - this has been the the law for decades. Firearm carry permit holders have always been able to carry long guns or handguns in permitted locations including libraries (nobody does however). Did something happen recently other than the liberal press embracing the gun control flag trying to inflame public opinion to take citizen's rights away?

Getcrazy said, "If you need to bring a gun to the library to feel safe you should probably stay home" I think you misunderstand, most people who carry do so routinely. Just as people who choose to use pepperspray for defense carry routinely. It doesnt make you paranoid, or looking for trouble. Citizens with carry permits are much more law abiding than the general public because they recognise and accept the responsibility of carrying a firearm. The BCA has documented this and this paper recently wrote on this fact.

Yet *another* statistically non-issue with firearms, makes it's way into politics and into print! Wow. How folks like Getcrazy say it is the gun owners that are the paranoid ones, is beyond me? It is the gunphobics who are the actual paranoid ones .... fearing things that don't exist. That said, I'd bet that Getcrazy has never been inside the downtown Minneapolis Library .... the sketchy types always hanging around there makes carrying a firearm inside there, make sense. I'd bet all the Librarians carry pepper-spray and have a security escort out to their cars, after dark. That place is a zoo!

Guns have not been a problem for metro libraries. “It’s a nonissue.”

I'm not worried. Most of the gun carriers who are not police officers never have stepped foot in a library. I doubt they can even read!

Stribblog said, "I'm not worried. Most of the gun carriers who are not police officers never have stepped foot in a library. I doubt they can even read!" Using perjorative terms doesnt further the conversation here. And at the risk of bursting your misconceptions, you'd likely find permit holders very well read. I was just in the library today.
