With a growing number of Hmong and Latinos among its clientele in need of help, the Salvation Army put out a call Thursday for food that is more suited to Asian and Hispanic diets.

This story reminds me of offering to buy a hungry person a meal and they tell you what to buy.Let the churchs who brought them here buy the groceries.

There is an old Monty Python statement: Adapt-adopt-and improve. To those who want to be particular in receiving charitable foods I would say--try a little of our local, USA, American foods and perhaps it will get you by. After all, when in Rome--do as the Romans do.

Maybe those that want ethnic foods should encourage people of their own ethnic origins to donate. Gee, what a shame we aren't catering to the demands of those who want free food.

If I would have wtitten an article like this suggesting donating these sorts of foods for specific racial groups I would have been labeled a heartless racist. How can stereotypes of races NOT exist when we read something this ridiculous? Do all Mexicans hang out at Taco Bell all day and Asians only eat at Chinese restaurants? Seriously? I'm sure the censors will delete this post quickly or not print it at all, but stories like this only srved to divide and reinforce beliefs I would have said were ridiculous had I not read them in the Red Star.

"their stomachs won’t accept certain American foods." As Soucheray would say,"B as in B. S as in S." Rather, they don't like the foods we offer.

We'd all be healthier if we didn't eat so many "American foods".

As someone who was born and raised in the Good Old U.S.of A, let me remind you of a little tidbit always told to me as a child: Beggars can't be choosers!! I think it's very appropriate for this story....

I generally have supported the Salvation Army over other local charities. The purpose of food banks should not be to replace the recipients entire food supply, but to augment and assist. Total dependence on charity is Un-American and not in agreement with religious teachings. We share what we can, of what is available. Next thing will be a Christian charity having to offer Kosher or Halal foods. Let the flamers disagree, but our survival as a nation depends on some degree of assimilation over time. Immigrants have to adapt to our weather, why not our foods?

I agree with the Soucheray and the beggars quotes. If you get in line and accept someone's gift of charity you accept whatever you are given and thank them for it. As a child my family was homeless for a period of about 6 months and we all got really tired of government cheese and peanut butter but were thankful for something to eat and tried to be as creative as possible in using what we had. To complain about what we received elicited a swift and harsh rebuke from our parents. To request something more to our liking would have been unthinkable. I learned alot from my parents from this. If you find yourself in a position of needing help, ask for it. Take whatever is offered and say "thank you". Work your tail off to get yourself into a better position. Once you're in a better position, give some of it back to the next person needing it.

When one seeks charity, one must be thankful. Kind of like signing up for toys for tots and demanding a 50 inch screen TV. This article makes me less motivated to donate!!
