The liberal resistance to science

  • Article by: Glenn Garvin , Miami Herald
  • Updated: February 27, 2013 - 9:02 PM

Their denial of science is far more organized, far more destructive and far less covered in the media than that of conservatives.

In my experience, liberals just seem to loathe science. They want no part of scientific method, controlled/blinded studies, p values, etc. Their disdain for science is evident every day, in articles, posts, etc. America is in an intellectual decline, and where it ends is anybody's guess.......

Research shows that children of same-sex couples are as likely to thrive as those raised by opposite-sex parents. But because their families are denied legal marriage, some of those children experience needless financial and psycho-social hardship.

Mr Garvin - the lefties are going to come at you fast and hard in the comments here. Get ready for all manner of emotional shrieking backed by misleading and misinterpreted studies and statistics. Should be entertaining.

"Get ready for all manner of emotional shrieking backed by misleading and misinterpreted studies and statistics."--Much like what Mr. Garvin presented in his article.

Speaking as someone who is generally liberal-minded I agree with pretty much everything written in this piece. Keep in mind this does not excuse the significant problem of science-denial that many conservatives have regarding issues like evolution, homosexuality and global warming to name just three. And speaking of denial and/or ignorance of science Republican Rep. Glenn Gruenhagen articulated a real doozy of an example of that today with his comments about homosexuality. It's amazing how strongly one can believe one is right when the truth is exactly the opposite.

While I agree with the columnist that the first priority has to be about saving the most lives, labelling people who are concerned about indiscriminate genetic modification of our food as antiscience luddites sounds pretty knee jerk to me. I personally want a LOT of science being done in terms of testing these new foods for potential harmful effects before being released into the populace. That's just sound scientific practice. Still, since the author's primary purpose with this article was to harm liberals' reputation and not promote science, then I guess he can view it as mission accomplished and get a job on Faux News.

Mr. Garvin landed many body blows to the straw man, quite possibly the only opponent with whom he's capable of winning a battle of wits. Well played, sir.

There have been numerous studies that show GMO crops are harmful to rats. I am willing to bet Mr. Garvin is receiving money from Monsanto to write this tripe, just as a new farm bill is going through congress. I am a conservative-Christian, and strongly oppose GMO's based on the bible (Genesis 1:11-12). And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

Any point is more convincing the fewer labels used.
