Caregiverto5 understates the critical issue. Nursing homes are funded at a rate that prohibits them from paying a decent wage to the aides. The aides provide the hands-on care for the residents and are generally the only people interacting with the residents and knowing their needs. The poor pay they receive results them needing to work multiple jobs, work as much overtime as they can get, and lose their jobs or at least days of work when their poorly funded car or daycare are unreliable. These people need pay commensurate with their responsibilities.

"A group of House and Senate members unveiled their proposal Tuesday. It calls for boosting state nursing home reimbursements by $56 million over the next two years. That would be a substantial increase over the $382 million the state gave to nursing homes in 2012." I am a little slow at times but how is $56m over 2 years a substantial increase over $382 million in 1 year?

Makes sense. The funding should come from cuts to other underperforming govt programs.
