I met and heard Dr. Koop several times. Anyone interested in public health service should study his biography. He put ideology and politics aside in order to make decisions that were based on science and health. I didn't agree with his personal opinions about abortion, etc., but I respected them, and him. He was a wonderful man.
This was a great man. He made it clear his duty was to protect and improve everyone's health regardless of even the ideology of his own party. I doubt we'll see a public-health champion like this again.
