The American version will be a foot-long sandwich with lots of extra cheese and mayonnaise.
It would be great if more restaurants in the twin cities offered more foods of this style.
Isn't four tablespoons of oil a lot no matter what type of oil it is? That is the same as 1/4 cup of oil.
More Americans have tree nut allergies than celiac disease. Yet in any "heart healthy" story there's never one paragraph regarding an alternative to tree nuts for a percentage of the population that outnumbers those with celiac disease - a topic the popular press writes thousands of inches on annually.
The article says: "Mediterranean diets have long been touted as heart-healthy, but that's based on observational studies that can't prove the point."
This is not true. Dr. Ancel Keys at the University of Minnesota proved the heart health benefits of the Mediterranean diet beginning almost 60+ years ago with his Seven Countries study that followed 12,000 men for decades. Google his name. Give credit where it's due.
As I eat my breakfast of whole grain toast with olive oil, fruit spread, and an orange with milk, looking forward to dinner with a glass of red wine I thank these researchers for studying the obvious.
Somehow I have a feeling the fully loaded gyro I get at Wally's falaphel house in Dinkytown isn't included in this healthy "Mediterranean diet"
Like any well-meaning study, the food industries in America will find a way to contort it. Eschew red meat? Here, have this industry-farm chicken! How about some fish? We have this Atlantic salmon loaded with dyes and anti-bacterial meds!
Yet another study showing that low carb(sugar) trumps low fat. I work in medicine and we have been using low carb/high protein and fat diets to treat high lipids for years. Someday the Government will modify the food pyramid to reflect this, before our entire country turns into one giant gooey blob.
Did the author of this article see the research done on red wine? That the non-alcoholic red wine was superior to the alcohol based wine!
