I'm skeptical that it would take months of research to determine that black people don't identify themselves as Negro anymore. It should have taken about 2 seconds.

So what about people of color that don't want to be called "african americans" (think somalis).

In this day and age of "embrace diversity" why do we even ask about race or color anymore?

With the melting pot being so effective how do some people even know they are yellow, black, white or even brown? It is really based on skin color, nose structure, lip sizes, hair texture or do you just know because your parents (which could be from two different races) told you what to write down on the form?

gmailgmail - it is to perpetuate government support of "disadvantaged" minorities - I agree with you, let's get beyond the victim culture today. I don't want to be called "Caucasian American" - I think it's ridiculous. And many "African-Americans" ancestors have been in North America hundreds of years before my ancestors. As is BHO: "consider myself black". Guess what, pal? You're not "black". You are half Kenyan & half American. Get over it already.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the greatest Americans and he always used the word Negro. Will this diminish his legacy?

Census Bureau is dropping use of the word 'Negro' to describe black Americans in its surveys - Don't worry, I'm sure the rednecks in the southern states will pick up the slack.
