The latest effort to close "the gap." Headstart failed. ECFE failed. Bussing failed. Magnet Schools failed. But this will do it, for sure. Lucy will hold the ball this time... There will be one benefit, though, lots of parents of young children will get free daycare. In 10 years (5? 1?), this benefit will be so pervasive that any attempt to limit it, or, God forbid, eliminate it altogether, despite the fact that it will not have accomplished its goal, will be treated as a disaster brought upon us by evil bean-counting Republicans with no heart. A tiny reduction in spending will be talked about with overheated rhetoric, involving loaded words like, "fury" and "devastating." And the gap will still be there, we'll be wondering why we have such a tough time balancing our budget, and a new program to eliminate it will be put forth...

Asians seem to be doing quite well at closing this gap, without any extra programs being required. Are any intrepid Star Tribune reporters interested in ... at the very least ... oh, I don't know ... maybe ... talking to them about how they do it? Maybe I'm naive, but it seems to me this could make a wonderful contribution to this issue and would provide us with some very useful information regarding how we could deal with this problem without expanding the scope of government and going broke in the process. Just a friendly suggestion from a regular reader. You're welcome.
