James Lileks, you need to read The Last Full Measure by Bradley Moe (Minnesota Historical Society Press, 1993, pp. 207-9.) about the story of a Minnesota soldier named Thomas Pressnell, who in 1862 decided to pay a call upon Abraham Lincoln.
