Had Nixon won in 1960 the Civil Rights movement would have slowed. Kennedy's appearance and charming manner viewed on ever increasing amounts of TVs in homes around the country and the momentum of southerners' voting Democratic for many years allowed Kennedy to win the election and move civil rights forward. The popularity of the Civil Rights movement in the United States, as evidenced by Johnson's landslide victory was greater than this article chooses to admit. Kennedy knew that the Republicans were going to nominate Goldwater and he knew only a Democrat at the time would cooperate to continue to push the civil rights struggle forward. The three pictures on the wall were there because all three were killed.
