Isle Royale DNA analysis shows more females than expected, suggesting that population decline there may reflect kin relationships, not gender imbalance.

Nice to see science used with wolves. the same science we will use to study the effects of the hunt on the wolves in Minnesota. Then we will be better able to understand the impact on the eco-system. Life is complicated.....ask the polar bears about that.

I have been following this since college many years ago when I heard Dave Mech speak. This really is a fascinating situation that has been studied for decades. A lot can be learned about the "Wolves of Minong".

Here's a novel idea. Study them all you want without interfering with them, i.e. don't make them pets like a bear biologist has. But let nature run its course without artificially introducing new members. Leave nature alone. BTW-any chance the radio collar the researchers put on the wolf is the cause of the other wolves trying to kill her? Maybe she now smells different and "not right" to their way of thinking?

Gee-wolves kill 900lb moose! I thought that they only killed the weak and sick moose. At least thats what the wolf lovers want everyone to believe. You don't suppose that wolves are possibly causing a decline in the moose population in MN. The DNR has been reporting for years that there are appoximately 3000 wolf in MN. I'll bet that there are double that number.

So sad that we have succumb to "managing" our wildlife. If people could only understand that nature will take care of itself without human intervention. History has shown us that some people feel the need to kill animals for sport and not as a necessity. What we do to the Earth we do to our selves.

Wildfox. It's pretty obvious you don't farm for a living or live outside the urban area. Think of it this way-take $20-$50-$100 out of your weekly paycheck and throw it in the street. If you lose an animal take $1000 and throw it away. Watch your pet dog be devoured. I think you would change your tune. Oh, BTW, we had free range chickens-racoons love them.

supervon2 ... I grew upon a family farm ... you missed my whole point. I guess that is the problem with most people.

Biologist Rolf Peterson and Professor John Vucetich are with Michigan Technological University, not Michigan Technical University.
