Dear Amy: I’m a 27-year-old black woman in graduate school. I have never been in any serious relationship, and am wondering if you have any advice on how to change this.

"Abuse" is overused. Save it for the extreme cases. It could also indicate she is a temperamental, moody, person and he choses to not rock the boat. Another question might be to ask how the in-laws started the relationship. Did they welcome her? Does she feel part of the family? No emotional bonds were mentioned only gifts and meals.

Would you want your in-laws coming over once a week to inspect your home and children? The nosy grandmother should be thankful for what she has, and the husband/son should be thankful his wife keeps their home up and is a good mother.

So what if someone doesnt buy you gifts or make you dinner? Maybe theres something else, have inlaws treated her badly at some point or does she not feel comfortable for some reason? The writer states that bride is not respectful but she sounds rather materialistic about it
