While his plan is all well and good, our local school district doesn't even provide the same Kindergarten across the board for all 5/6 years olds. I'd rather see Federal passing and pushing of all day every day Kindergarten for all students versus Pre-K programming.
I don't believe that sending your kid to school one more year earlier makes for a better student. I saw a poll somewhere that by the time kids are in second grade they are pretty much equal whether they had pre-school or not.
This is another example of politics and ideology driving educational policy instead of scientific research. The uninformed tend to think "Well, just send them to school sooner". It doesn't work that way. The evidence of the long-terms benefits of early childhood education is mixed at best. Children go to school at about 5 for very good reasons related to cognitive development. Let me also point out the one's "beliefs" and "polls" are not a good foundation for improved education.
The benefits are debatable and far from conclusive. Do a few pilots to determine results prior to making big investments here.
This has nothing to do with improving the education of children. It is about creating more union teacher jobs. Everything Obama promotes is for the benefit of unions. Union labor for education. Union labor for roads and bridges. Go read his SOTU speach and try to find one solution proffered by Obama that doesn't benefit unions.
LIDSMOM: "While his plan is all well and good,"...______Sorry to disagree with you, but any plan that is based on spending money we don't have & won't have for years to come, because we are BROKE isn't a plan at all.
After "Headstart" was a total failure by the administration's own analysis, why are we pouring millions of dollars into a new failure?
snarky45 said: "After "Headstart" was a total failure by the administration's own analysis, why are we pouring millions of dollars into a new failure?"-------------------------C'mon now...Headstart was under-funded! I'm sure the administration has learned from that and will pour PLENTY of money into this program, ensuring certain success.
Snarky45---After "Headstart" was a total failure by the administration's own analysis, why are we pouring millions of dollars into a new failure?---In a word? Unions. Perhaps if our leader would cry a little more, he could get the low info voting left behind his agenda.
Why wait until they're 4? By that time they may have already learned some politically incorrect sound-bites from their parents. Maybe it's time to send them off to camp as soon as they're sitting up and taking solid food.
