Nice column Jim, and I guess it helps to have a class and thoughtful subject like Paul Molitor.

A lot of people have talked of having Molitor as the new coach, but the real question is, does he have the knowledge and coaching skill to bring the right stuff to this team. He may very well be the right guy, but no one knows until he does the job.

How can one tell if Molitor could handle the job if it isn't offered to him???? I'm sure he would relish the chance if given to him, and with his experience, etc., would make a fine big league manager......which this team could use...

I think Molitor is happy now. Why would he want the stress of being manager? He has two young kids and the perfect job now.

"Class and thoughtful", really? "two young kids", and also a handful of older kids -- one on the side in each city he used to live, that's class, I guess

There are some people who have already achieved something great in life and don't have the motivation to climb more mountains - even though they likely could do better than others who are in positions of power. Molitor is one of those guys. He would be a HUGE improvement over Gardy, but simply has little desire to manage the Twins or get involved in the political infighting necessary to get that job.

Molitor is such a logical choice as a manager that I'm surprised this article didn't refer to him as "future Twins' manager Paul Molitor." Managers' decisions have very little actual effect on a team (some number-crunchers estimate that the absolute best manager only improves his team by about 2 wins), so the most important thing in a manager is to excite the fans. Who better to do that than a native Minnesotan Hall of Famer? As for tims77's comment about whether he would want the job, Molitor was on record this offseason saying he wanted a formal coaching assignment with the Twins. I'm sure he'd take the job if offered.

What I DON'T want to see is our org losing him to another, a la Jack Morris back to the Jays as a color guy on the air. We had better not keep Paul waiting much longer. I also see him as a crystal clear alternative to Gardy should we stumble out of the gate this season. Twins ownership had better be paying close attention.

Molitor seems like LaRussa - great baseball mind, extremely low key/calm.
