Expensive buyouts make university bigwigs nervous in this economic climate, but losing also becomes costly because interest and donations wane in tough times.

"I want to know how Tom Izzo does it?"... Watch him - Preparation, opportunity, and selflessness. He is a crafty coach, yet he too has his days... Driven without driving, use each player to their strength; respects their ethic as much as his own; believes he is not in charge - just given opportunities; and goes after opponents with "The Art of War" in his pocket. How he gets that drive without having ego get in the way is something to behold. Just guessing.

Chip, Norwood Teague owns the financial consequences of replacing Smith because he gave Tubby an extension on the heels of back-to-back 6-12 seasons. Some university presidents might find that a terminable offense in itself, but Teague will survive that and now must do the necessary to not only correct his mistake but to restore credibility with a fan base that suffered through the Maturi era.

Before panic takes over the metro - number 25 Notre Dame scored just 3 points in 17 minutes tonight. And they then went on to beat Pitt. How does that happen to a team like Notre Dame?. How, indeed. Seventeen minutes is a very long time... Other than they started thinking of mistakes they could make and they went careful and played "Xs and Os", how is that even possible?... (Hey, the old coaches' joke was - "the easiest way to win is to have the other guy give his players a turnover speech")...

TUBBY SMITH can confirm his reputation for personal integrity by hand delivering his resignation letter to Gophers athletic director Norwood Teague today, a letter that should contain: an explicit waiver of his employment contract's $2.5 million buyout clause; an apology for recruiting high-risk players including a clearly troubled kid who was expelled from a Minneapolis private school; an apology for refusing to kick players off the team after they were convicted of criminal charges; an apology for apparently knowing nothing about creating and running a productive offense and failing to hire an assistant who does; and an apology for publicly blaming everyone and everything except himself for his failure to produce a winning Big 10 record and consistent NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure. TUBBY TIME is over; time for Tubby to do the honorable thing and leave Minnesota.

No, it won't be cheap to replace him, but it is time to let him know this isn't a retirement landing pad.

What a total mess of an athletic program. Sure, give Kill a raise, then have him cut a $800k check to North Carolina. Tubby and Kill: falling upwards.

Now, given the shortage of funds, why one earth did Teague give Smith a contract extension and, of course, why on earth did he agree to play $800,000 to take a modest football team off of the schedule so that Kill's charges can play another East Overshoe Tech?

Teague would be obligated to give Kill a raise for paying for a real basketball coach? Kill will never see a .500 Big Ten record . If we are going toi accept failure in every program, which it seems is par for this course, get the budding assistant and pay them nothing to win 40% of conference games some years. I too greatly overestimated Smith's abilities, even though the warning signs were all there. He was drummed out of his last job for a reason. Cut the cord with Smith after the season, send Teague packing for the colossal 800,000 dollar Kill blunder and the unwarranted Smith extension. and Put Kaler on notice that being a laughingstock is no longer an option, and demand quantifiable results and progress from him also.

I would guess Teague isn't worried about coming up with the money since he has Maturi to do the fundraising for him.
