Lakers owner Jerry Buss, who lived Hollywood dream while leading team to 10 titles, dies at 80

Jerry Buss had been a chemist and a mathematician long before he bought the Los Angeles Lakers in 1979. The self-made millionaire with a head for business and an impresario's heart assailed the NBA with every skill he acquired along the way.

Buss was an amazing guy, very accomplished and truly larger-than-life. But this article makes it sound like the Lakers didn't do much between the time they left Minneapolis and the time he bought them. The reality is that in the 1960's they went to the NBA finals something like eight times and had tremendous rosters. The problem? They consistently ran into Bill Russell and the Celtics. Those were some epic battles.

A story that may interest some. The Detroit Gems were purchased by someone we all know. Max Winter and Sid Hartman purchused the Gems for $600 dollars, not thousands, or Millions. Moved them to Minneapolis and renamed them the Minneapolis Lakers. Sid was back writing for the Trib, and Max sold the Lakers to Bob Short, Minneapolis Trucking Company owner. Max had to sell the Lakers so he could be part of the Viking ownership group. Bob Short moved the Lakers to LA and later sold them. Now the lakers are worth Millions, 100s of them, and Max and Sid are forgotten in the who story. A bit of history.

Not really, VikingA. In 1947, Ben Berger and Morris Chalfen of Minnesota purchased the Detroit Gems for $15,000 from Gems owner Maury Winston (a Jewler of course) and moved the equipment to Minneapolis. They were inspired by Minnesota's nickname, "Land of 10,000 Lakes", so they christened their new team the Lakers. They hired Max Winter as GM. Years later, Jerry Buss bought a chance on an NBA franchise and won the lottery!
