Lost 7 of last 9 - typical Borton team late-season performance by the Gophers. 4-8 in Big Ten - no hope for a conference winning record. When is the last time the Gophers even finished above .500 in Big Ten play? Can't even blame it on the strength of the conference this year. Why does Borton get a secret contract extension when her teams can't even pull out a winning BIg Ten record anymore? Please don't tell me its because they won the BWI joke last year. We deserve better than Borton! She needed to go a long time ago.

This was a heartbreaking game! We were in good position to make a run at NW until Banham went out with her 4th foul. Then for the next three minutes we heaved up desperation 3 after dsperation 3 while not stopping anything on defense. I realize we are a young team but Cotton was out there part of the time and couldn't settle the team down! This game was lost in that three minutes.

Acecat, tell us more about the secret contract extension...i heard rumblings about her contract being fudged a bit before Maturi left to extend it a couple more years beyond her original deal signed in 2008. So we will see her beyond 2014?!!?? Star Trib article from July 2008 makes it sound like she should be done in a year...not true?

If what Acecat says is true, someone needs to investigate. How can a public institution make a secret contract? That is troubling. It is also troubling that in a loss like yesterday (and the last several losses) the blame continues to be placed on the players - i.e., not stepping up, not rebounding, not defending, etc. If the game plan consistently falls apart in the second half, doesn't that speak to the one calling the shots?

Where is the informed one? A bit of hubris in that title, but he/she usually makes sense. Maybe took a hiatus from Gopher basketball, men and women? Has lots of company, me included.

pinenut--I am the biggest Borton basher I know of but there is some truth to the ole' sayin',"the coach can't shoot the ball or defend a player". Yes the play calling was bad, but the ultimate responsibility for what happens on the court belongs to the players. The overall talent level on this team is average and the coaching only pulls them down from there. It is obvious that this team has not been schooled on basic defense (moving your feet, keeping your base, not jumping after fakes...); nor have they been taught some basic fundimental offensive plays (pick and roll, motion, or just a simple power post move). Plenty of blame to go around.

The 2008 extension was a golden parachute from Kathryn Brown and President Bruininks to set her up as "untouchable" after his retirement. Joel Maturi told me personally that he didn't agree to the extension and it was done above his head. I don't know of any extension beyond that one, but if there has been some sort of deal worked out since the 2008 golden parachute it should be investigated. The place is fraught with dysfunction.

I'm not nearly as informed as many who follow this team, olcoach73 (many highly informed, passionate fans post on the gopher street message board). I just call it as I see it. I do think part of the Gopher's problems this year do stem from the strength of their B1G schedule (six games against the top three in the conference and ten against the top six), but I agree with raymondb62's comments that this team does not show that it has been coached in some basic fundementals during long stretches of some games. I'm disappointed by this loss partially because Northwestern is not one of the ten games against top B1G teams and their complete reliance on Banham to win even winnable games is discouraging. I do beleive that if Borton is replaced it should be by a coach with a proven ability to coach up average to good players with good gametime emotional intensitu and adjustment ability because this is where the coaching deficiency is most evident. I doubt the recruiting will improve much no matter who comes in as the historical recruiting profile has never changed much. JMHO. Go Gophers!

Pinenut, coaches contracts are public records so you look for it, you can find the information. I sure wish Strib would really dig into what's wrong with all this. I've mentioned the drastic drop in average attendance but did you all know that the only team with less Big Ten wins over the last 4 years is Indiana. There is so much to point to as to why Borton should be long gone. It only proves administration no longer even cares about women's basketball, golden parachute or not.
