Public employees get another day off. Where does it end?
Enh, such is life. I am glad they get the day off. They work very hard and I appreciate their work. Including teachers, postman, government workers and...anyone I am not immediately thinking of. Thank you!
Yes, public or govt. employees have too many days off. And, they are overpaid and underworked too. Enough.
Public or govt. servants or employees should not have the power to give themselves a raise whenever they feel like it, whether they deserve it or not. That power should rest in the hands of the public, or we the people. After all, they work for us. Let us reform this now. The best leaders lead by example and are not self-servants.
The problem isn't that public employees get too many days off. It's that private sector employees get too few. The U.S. is one of the few countries in the world where private sector workers have no legal right to any paid vacation days, and it's rare to get more than two weeks, in comparison to most other countries. And no, I'm not talking about "Spain and Greece," the two countries that right-wingers love to cite as horror stories. I'm talking about successful places like Australia (four weeks), Hong Kong and Singapore (both 2.5 weeks), and Norway (four to six weeks, depending on age and job category).
You guys are asking the wrong questions. The right-wing media want you to be jealous of public workers' benefits so that you'll rage against them rather than against the employers who are s****ing you over in so many ways.
hermajesty-- You are spot-on. Workers in the US are treated far worse, in general, than workers in other "first-world" nations, our competitors. The trends have been getting worse, too. The rates of compensation for top executives has been rising at a much, much higher rate than the compensation of average workers. The unions in our nation aren't too strong, causing our downfall. Unions are too weak, keeping our workers treated worse than most. Less vacation, less parental leave, longer work weeks, etc., and the gains in productivity aren't going to the workers, they're going to management who made the workers do more for less.
I can solve this problem, no more days off period. Get rid of weekends, all holidays and all PTO! Happy?
Rather than showing anger that our public-sector worker get a day off, maybe you should ask your employer to do the same. Maybe you should band together with your co-workers and collectively bargain for more. Many, if not most, businesses used to give more holidays/time off than they do now, so are you getting paid more or just being asked to do more work for less money?
