There’s too much educational overhead and too little to show for it. We must improve quality and efficiency now.

SO tiresome...this is the same old tired try to not fund education except this is one of the weakest arguments about it. Education is not a business with clients...it is a human service dealing with imperfect humans and doing a much better job of educating the masses than in the days of the "one room schoolhouse" as the author claims to have attended as a youth.

njoylife303: you beat me to it. The writer pretty much sums up human behavior and you can find this in every single profession. I loved the comment that we have too many teachers and I bet he stands in line to tell everybody that the teacher/student ratio in the classroom, is not important. Tell that to a first grade teacher but can I be there to hear that teacher laugh hysterically? This is an author to pretends to be an authority, but every single teacher that reads this can find ten of his "facts" that are misguided at best, wrong at worst.

PS. If he finds a problem with early retirements, he must have a real problem with the military.

Many of us do not do enough work. While many people labor 2,000 hours in a single year, the classroom contact hours among high school teachers is around 865 hours while summers and other periods are free.--------------------- As a high school teacher I would love to cut back to 2000 hours per year. Unfortunately, with 180 kids per day who come through my English classroom, I just don't see that happening. By the way, don't ever ask your child's school about "average class size" or "student-teacher ratio" because those are meaningless numbers. Ask what the "class caps" are in core classes like English, math, soc studies andnscience

Another factless emotional piece by the strib. Not news and low end reporting.
