If you're going to make socks and sleeves mandatory, you should also make it mandatory for goalies to wear a hooded kevlar turtleneck. Two goalies have almost bled out because of cuts to the throat in the last 15 years. There's just no reason for that. Make it mandatory that they all wear hooded kevlar turtlenecks. It's one of the sickest sights in sports.

Now that I think about it, Anti Miettinen wears kevlar socks...

Although we can't prove it,there is no doubt in my mind that Cooke did it deliberately. This was one of those times that it is embarrasing to be a fan of the NHL.IMHO the kevlar socks and sleeves should be mandatory--and Composite sticks should be banned, the NHL needs more scoring, and too many good scoring chances are lost because the stick broke.Yesterday,on NHL Tonight there was a guy who's stick broke on a SHOOTOUT ATTEMPT!!--Talk about a buzzkill.

Get rid of helmets, shields, composite sticks, and huge shoulder pads. All these innovations have changed the game for the worst. Remember the days of Bobby Orr racing down the ice, hair blowing in the wind, ready to drop the gloves, and racking up huge numbers. Bring back wood sticks.

True enough that Kevlar socks would provide additional protection against gashing and lacerations. But year after year its not severed achillies tendons thats hockey's major safety problem. Medicine has gotten to the point where these unfortunate accidents can be for the most part repaired. Concussions and other brain injuries - permanent, debilitaiting, life altering and life endiing. Better head protection; soft sider elbow and shoulder pads (old school equipment technology) and rules on head shots 'with teeth' in them are the true key to the long term health of the sport. As it is, the Lexan material used in elbow and shoulder equipment are nothing less than 'legalized' brain damaging weaponry.

grayzly, I don't think he did it deliberately, but he was making a dirty play. He lifted his leg/knee in an attempt to throw Karlsson off balance while driving him into the boards. Skates should be on the ice at all times during a hit. A dirty play, IMO; but I don't think Cooke meant to step on his tendon. I think Cooke should have faced discipline for severely injuring an opponent on a dirty play even if the injury wasn't the intent.

I think the Kevlar socks are a good idea. Its not like they would be adding another piece of equipment. Down at the bottom of this piece I noticed in the short takes that with John D and Jarmo K now in charge, the Blue Jackets will be cleaning house. Too bad for Todd Richards, as by all accounts he's been doing a good job with the little bit of talent he has in Columbus. If the article is correct, hopefully he lands on his feet elsewhere.

OMG. Time will tell that the helmet and shield were the worst thing that ever happened to pro hockey. The glory years were the 1960's through the 1980's. Less gear not more!

To minneg56- "rules on head shots 'with teeth' "! Any reference to teeth and hockey is just plain cruel.
