Minnesota poem: It rhymes, but is there reason?

Not everyone agrees that "Minnesota Blue," by a Hawaiian singer-songwriter, should represent the state.

I read the poem. Its strength is a listing of Minnesota's natural and social features. But, its tone is nostalgic, which is fine in its place but not for a state poem. The poem begs the question: is Minnesota still the way I remember it? The answer is 'sort of.' Finally, it's corny. But, maybe we are, too.

I agree with strandra. The poem is dated--no haze or pollution? "Hidden indian trails" but no mention of the Ojibwe and Dakota people who were the stewards of this land for for thousands of years? Carol Connelly and Joyce Sutphen have it right: let's celebrate hundreds of Minnesota poems that express the diversity of our fair state.

As a poet myself, I say NO! The state should not have one state poem. If it does, I hope it would not be as cheesy as the mess I just read.

Wonderful to see poetry on the front page. A Valentine for me. Keep the dialogue going. We need a poem-a-day in the Star Tribune. One poem is not enough. Listen to our state poet laurate. Joyce Sutphen is has it right.

Personally, I prefer the one that begins "there once was a maid from St. Paul..."

In addition to its poetic shortcomings, this illustrates our legislature at work: introducing bills on subjects the sponsors haven't read about since high school.

Don't our state leaders have more to worry about than our lack of a state poem? I would like to ask our leaders to focus on the REAL ISSUES in this state and stop wasting time on topics that add no value to the problems facing MN residents.
