Walker Art Center will bring its wacky, popular cat-video festival to the grandstand in August.

Really? The grandstand and not the park? $10.00 tickets AND Mr. Tabbytoes has to stay home? I think greed is blinding the WAC to exactly what made the cat film festival so special... How sad. Meow.

way to ruin what was a beautiful event on a hill overlooking downtown.

I thoroughly enjoyed the evening on the Walker lawn last summer and I'm also really looking forward to the grandstand version. It was pretty obvious they could barely contain the amount of folks who showed up last year; they need the bigger facilities knowing it will only grow in popularity.

- drive to fairgrounds rather than walk/bike within neighborhood? FAIL - gatecharge entry @ $10 instead of wandering up freely? FAIL - pay for parking @ fairground b/c public transport options are limited? FAIL - sell overpriced, underwhelming fair food? FAIL - sit in a stadium seats, directed line views, and structured, contained, policed movement throughout the fairgrounds? FAIL - keep the cats out? FAIL - call it a crowdsourced, art event that is so hipster, so now, and so very social media when its simply another way to commoditize and capitalize on an emergent social celebration? WIN! the cat's outta this bag. "art"? meet commerce.

tytonic - after one event at a surprising crowd of over 10,000, what do you think will happen next time? It will grow and the Walker could barely contain things this year. If you're okay with the Walker having up to 20K people trampling up its beautiful green lawn so you can have a free ticket and a place for your cat to use the bathroom, fine. Complain all day about it. But at max capacity and already stretched to the limits for staffing, they had to find another location. $10 is a cheap date night in the grand scheme of things. You can take a free shuttle bus to the fair. But if going to the State Fair is not "hipster" or "so very social media" enough for you, then that's too bad. Sharing the event with 10K people the first time sure was exclusive, right?

A film/video festival with bleacher seats at a noisy state fair? This is one of those 'just because you can, doesn't mean you should' marketing moments.

bracystake - the event only made news b/c of the "surprising" crowd of 10K. I live in the immediate vicinity of the Walker so I am already accustomed to people at Rock the Garden, the various First Saturday events and Music/Movies. And I'm definitely NOT a hipster or even a cat lover. So drop the personal antagonism - its unwarranted and a cheap shor to divert attention from how the event is moving forward. My point was that emergent social celebrations are quickly commoditized for someone's profit - and "art" isn't what its about. It doesn't have ANYTHING to do with the people.
