I don't think arts/entertainment can or should replace retail completely. There needs to be a bit of everything in a vibrant area. What about Nicollet? Shouldn't both avenues be considered as one entity for the area to thrive? For lasting, optimum results we need to eschew chains and foster independent development. Year-round walkability is paramount.

Go to Prague and you will see a wide center island like a park on their mainstreet. Hennepin has adequate right-of-way to accomplish this. I proposed this when I was in the process of developing eigth & Hennepin into a 60 story buidling connected by skyway to the Daytons building and the Lasalle Bldg and then a skyway across Henneping to the property on the other side of Hennepin. The turn in the real estate economy changed all of this.

Block E needs to be torn down, and fast. At this point, that building is nothing more than a punchline, and has become a deterrent to businesses that might actually have a chance of otherwise succeeding at that location.

I walk from the Walker and across the Mississippi river on an almost daily basis. I don't see the need that this author is yaking about.

I wouldn't say the area lacks pedestrian traffic. There are plenty of thugs patrolling the sidewalks between 6th and 9th.

Minneapolis wants the Super Bowl in 2018 and the Olympics in 2024. How does the plan to simplify Hennepin into an arts avenue help those goals?

Get rid of the bums and thugs, then spend money on park space.

What Henneping Avenue needs is more affordable entertainment that doesn't require a bank loan or a huge credit line to attend.

"The poor will always be with us" and so will the thugs, panhandlers, and peep shows. You can beautify Hennepin and they'll simply create a new problem area or two a few blocks away.
