My 85 year old father (who has congestive heart disease and one lobe of his lung removed) went to the emergency room. It was determined that he had pneumonia and should be admitted. Preparations were started, then he was told that was there was no one to take care of him, so he would have to either go to Rochester or Minneapolis (each 50+ miles away) or go home. There was no offer of transportation. Luckily my brother lives in the same town and was able to drive him to Rochester. There are many who do not have that resource or the presence of mind to ask for that help.
Selective concern really bugs me. Everyone gets fluffed up on some issue like this but doesn't seem to see an even worse deterioration coming in healthcare overall. If anyone thinks things are going to get better with the implementation of ObamaCare, think again! We better focus on the bigger issue and not worry so much about the little distractions.
Staffing levels at any business should not be regulated by the state. If the government is foolish enough to pass a bill setting staffing levels for hospitals, where does it end? Are they going to establish minimum staffing levels at car dealerships for minimum number of mechanics? How about about minimum staffing at Walmart or Target or Comcast? Hey, let's go even further. How about when your furnace goes out and you call for service. The state could require two technicians to come out because everyone knows that it's much safer that way.
Nurses get blamed when things go wrong - not administrators.
If your short on nurses in an emergency room, then people can die. People should be able to express their concerns over quality of care & through their representatives set a minimum standard of care. That's why we license daycare, Doctors, etc. Hospitals are now running their businesses for profit not care lavels.
