St. Thomas trustees may name a woman lay scholar as president

The university's Board of Trustees, meeting Thursday, may break with tradition and name a woman as president.

As a St. Thomas graduate from the '60s, if this is true, I heartily congratulate the Board for making a decision which assuredly is in the best interests of the University, not out-dated habit. It reflects the good judgment that even a conservative institution can change to pursue the best interests of its students. Please now take your wisdom to the College of Cardinals.

With fewer priests, their are fewer priests to choose from - so the University had to open it up. With 50% of the student women, and about 40% business majors, Sullivan sounds like a good choice...at least on paper.

Gender aside, congratulations to St Thomas for being able to attract a first rate administrator! She is an extraordinary leader. Bravo!

This would be an acknowledgement that both no UST graduates are qualified for the position (a terrible reality) and that this particular candidate must be plugged into money players for the next capital campaign. If this candidate is in fact chosen it will be a truly sad day for UST.
