Usual problems sink Gophers again

Poor shooting, too many turnovers and shaky perimeter defense gave Illinois the chance to erase a 12-point first-half lead.

Bye, Tubby!

Joe Coleman can't shoot. Andre Hollins isn't a point guard. Trevor Mbakwe can't handle double teams. Austin Hollins has no poise on the road. Rodney Williams disappears. They turn the ball over too much and can't defend the three. While all of that is currently true, the "Why" question is slowly becoming more clear. If someone just started watching the Gophers this week, you couldn't possibly convince them that not long ago: Minnesota was ranked #8 in the country. The team recorded double-digit wins over both MSU and Illinois. Coleman scorched the Illini for 29. Andre dropped 41 on Memphis. Austin hit five straight threes to smoke Northwestern. Mbakwe looked like a beast on the boards. Williams looked like a candidate for "Most Improved". So don't tell me this is just another overmatched Gopher team with limited talent. This kind of rapid regression is clear evidence that the blame deserves to be placed squarely at the feet of the head coach.

I do really like Tubby. Just not as a coach for the Golden Gophers' program. We need someone with higher expectations and the ability to deliver on those expectations for the program, its players, and for themselves.

23 lousy points in the second half...do they not know the game is won by scoring more points than the opponent??? Once again, a Gopher team that can't hit a shot from outside of 10 feet. Basketball is all about putting the ball in the basket, thus the name "basketball"!

When the Gophers had the ball late in the first half, why didn't the players on the floor hold onto the ball for the final shot when their initial attempt to score a basket didn't go in? When the ball hit the rim, the shot clock then reset, which meant that they could've worked the clock down to the end. Instead, they gave it up and left the Illini with enough time to score, which they did by hitting a three-point shot. Even with the Gophers not scoring, not allowing Illinois an additional three points could have meant that the Gophers might have pulled out a win in what turned out to be a very close game. And near the end of the game, when the Illini players collapsed around Trevor Mbakwe, instead of calling a timeout, he attempted to make a pass to what he hoped was an open teammate on the floor. But instead of connecting with one of his teammates, he turned the ball over, which sealed the victory for Illinois. Shouldn't a senior have enough understanding to keep his head in the game to call for a timeout when the press is on? Was there no one on the bench to shout out a call for one? Those were two critical errors that helped cost the Gophers a victory in a game they could've won.

The fans don't even get that 50% of the game is defense and the gophers are not a good defensive team. They can clog up the paint but they do a poor job defending the perimeter. Offensively they are poor in a half court set. Is it any wonder why they struggle in this league, those are the things the other successful teams in this league do.

It is insulting. Does anyone know where Maturi is these days? Is he actually teaching a class at the U? I'd like to sit in on the class and ask him a few questions. The fact that he still draws a paycheck and Tubby's kid draws a paycheck are also insulting.

This team needs a PG. This team also needs a coach. Tubby has no offense and he really can't recruit. I wonder what a Gopher practice consists of because it can't be any type of offense or three point defense and they can't make free throws so what do they practice? Sad to see some good talent do the usual U of M Big ten flop. Either exit the Big Ten or hold your coaches accountable to produce.

Tubby Smith can recruit but he makes some questionable decisions on who he goes after. A lot of three star level players come out of Minnesota that they barely even look at. He tries for the four and five star guys that are either going to go to duke, UnC, Kansas, etc, or have enough baggage that they either will wind up in a jail cell or academically inelgible. Those 3 star players are going to Wisconsin, Iowa, creighton, butler, and make significant contributions. The gophers have good athletes that don't know their role and don't adhere to any principles. Even the players they have could be successful with good coaching. I would love to see Oto Osieniks play for Bo Ryan. He's a good athlete, tall, can shoot, but they are just wasting him, and the fans think he sucks. If he came to Wisconsin, he would be a double digit scorer by his senior season.
