Giffords, a former Democratic congresswoman from Arizona, a gun owner, an astronaut's wife, a shooting survivor and an incipient gun-control advocate, is settling into the third act of her public life.

What happened to Gabby and the others was tragic and shouldn't have happened but nothing proposed would likely have made a difference. She is being used by President Obama and the anti-gun faction in Congress in their agenda to strip Americans of their Second Amendment rights. Don't be fooled when they say that is not their objective, it most certainly is.

" She is being used " .... nobody is "using" her. Just because she has some physical and speech impairments doesn't mean she isn't fully aware and capable of making her own decisions. And nobody is trying to strip 2nd amendment rights. The vast majority of Americans support universal background checks and additional regulations. Enough with the 2nd amendment fear mongering.

I have not heard any proposal to take anyone's guns away. This is simply the NRA's attempt to reframe the argument in order to get it's members to react. If you have an assault rifle it won't be taken away but future sales may be restricted. Ditto for extended clips. Furthermore, unless I've been asleep at the wheel for a few decades, I think we have the most powerful military on the planet so we don't need a bunch of untrained citizens with arsenals in their homes to defend our country in case of invasion. (Do you gun toters really think some other country will send in troops? Really?)

I haven't "heard" taking guns away, I have read it...right here in the MN proposals last week. There was a date and options to remove certain from state or surrender them. I can't tell if people are just throwing around the "nobody is suggesting taking guns away" to be intentionally deceptive or simply have not read the proposal and accept what they are being told.

She is using her experience to speak for the other victims of out of control weapon access who can't speak any more. It would be easier for the NRA to continue to speak of the hypothetical harmlessness of guns if all the victims of guns would die or fade into obscurity.

"I haven't heard any proposal to take anyone's gun away..." then you need to start paying attention. Making something illegal and turning millions of law abiding citizens into felons is as good as taking something away. If that isn't stripping away our 2nd amendment rights what is?

sharkyshark: "...nothing proposed would likely have made a difference. She is being used by President Obama and the anti-gun faction in Congress in their agenda to strip Americans of their Second Amendment rights. " Stop signs don't keep people from running them. Get rid of them! Only law-abiding citizens obey them anyway. And laws against murder: Useless! Criminals don't need no stinkin' laws! Since laws only make things worse for the law-abiding citizens, let's just have anarchy. No thanks. Getting rid of guns used for mass murders does not take away anyone's rights to own rifles, shotguns, handguns, etc. Those who claim the right for all Americans to own whatever guns they want to are ignoring the primary rights of Americans...the Right to LIFE, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

She was a much more sympathetic figure before she got involved with people like Bloomberg. Whether she's allowing herself to be used or "guided" by him nobody should be naive enough to believe that someone with his history of bans and coming from a state which just passed a gun-grabbing bill is ever going to be satisfied with some changes to background checks.

Yes, Gabby is being used. Just another politician who doesn't want to give up the spot light.

I went to every hearing and testified at the capital. The extreme NRA members DO NOT CARE about the gun violence problem we have. Believe me I witnessed it, they would shake their head, smile, and laugh during some of the testimony. And you can also see it in most of the comments listed in all these articles relating to the gun problems. It's all about me, myself and I; and MY GUN! Common sense citizens need to step up and be active in the gun violence problem we have! You are the majority! P.S. I'm a gun owner.
