First, I have not read the entire study. I am only speaking from my experience. I am 36. I was adopted in Ramsey Co when I was almost 3 years old. I have lived with mental illness my entire life, attachment disorder, PSTD..list goes on. I still have yet to build a healthy relationship and I have two children..and my husband left three yrs ago. After I was placed, I sat at the window for days waiting for my social worker to come back for me. I had symptoms right away of trauma but nothing was offered and my adopted parents were told to just ignore the behavior. I have suffered greatly as many children do everyday. I am now in DBT but it has been a struggle. I have to work really hard at learning skills. The one thing that has helped and probably kept me alive is learning Mindfullness. It's part of DBT which was started by Marsha Linehan. I often thenk about how we could implement something in the public schools. School is the only place that all kids have to pass through and it would be easy to identify trauma just like they identify learning disabilities. Teach the kids mindfulness, it reduces stress and stress is the bottom line for all illness. Have the children complete an inventory in order to identify any possible mental illness. Yes, it would be great to have someone in your life that you can trust when dealing with trauma but the reality is...we (children) don't have that and by the time we do get close to someone, they leave or we really never trusted them from the beginning. The point is..children with PSTD or are experiencing trauma now already know that no one is going to save us or fight for us..we are the forgotten children.
