Of course, the wolf could not possibly be involved. We have practically stopped logging in moose country, and the BWCA has now started to evolve into a climax forest. All of that means less deer, less snowshoe hares and less grouse. That means less wolf prey, so they turn to the next most available source, moose calves. If you only had 8000 to start, in an area with anywhere from 1000 to 2000 wolves, it doesn't take much of an increase in calf mortality to drop moose numbers that far. While the snail carrying parasites could be a problem, warmth isn't, unless you want to make the claim that North Dakota is getting colder, because their moose population is increasing and expanding south and west, where it is even warmer. Great story of a concerned citizen responding and rallying others to do something about a situation near and dear to many Minnesotans-- and me in New Jersey where we have no moose! I care because I see wildlife threatened all around us by the encroachment of humans. So we have lots of deer, now coyotes and an occasional bear rumbling through the back yards of our NYC suburb. Is global warming a part of the picture? You bet, and increasingly more so as more habitat is weakened or destroyed. People who care like the author and that small business owner can make a difference. Great work! citizen action responding to the decline of the revered moose population
