Just build a permanent lane. Why does MN DOT have to politicize this?

Why not just get rid of the shoulders in this area and repaint in an extra lane? I believe that's what they did on I94 between Mpls. & hwy 280, and on hwy 100 south of 394. It isn't a perfect solution, but it has seemed to help in these areas. Adding electronic signs and automatic gates seems dumb.

This project has been in the waiting for the past 18 years. Meanwhile, large improvements have been made in Woodbury, Highway 212 in Eden Praire, 35W Burnsville. Anybody who lives in Maple Grove and Plymouth know that 494 and 55 all the way up to Bass Lake Road is one of the biggest messes in the whole Twin Cities. Get with it MNDOT!!

People choose to live or work out that far, knowing full well the freeways were underbuilt. Why is it our job to bail out people who don't want to bear the cost of their choices?

MNDOT sure likes wasting money. Put the 3rd lane in and be done with it. What did this part of the world do to anger someone?

Well, I have news for you. Less than 5% of the Twin Cities workforce works in either downtown. The vast majority of people work in the burbs. We can't fit 3 million metro area people into Mpls. and think they can just work downtown. Understand? So it makes sense for most people to live in these awful strange icky areas you call the suburbs. As a matter of fact, many people actually work in or near the suburb they live. Such is the case with myself, and many of the fine taxpaying citizens of the area this story is about. So you see, they deserve good roads too.

liberalelite: (Boy your username sure fits) Plymouth and Maple Grove aren't "out that far." All drivers bear the cost of their choices, the gas taxes they pay go to the roads they use. Unlike mass-transit riders who only pay a very small portion of the full cost (especially with LRT and commuter rail). I guess its only members of the protected classes who get bailed out so that they don't have the bear the cost of their choices. Am I right?

35W Burnsville was overhauled, but two important factors still screw it up going northbound: 1) Car pool lane restricted until 10AM (they gotta make their MNPASS $) 1) State Troopers do not direct vehicles to the next off-ramp, so traffic immediately stalls trying to lane change to the left or slow down. 2) Slow-moving semi-trucks entering from Cliff Road that immediately bolt over to the left lane, causing a cascading stalling effect on traffic for miles. Easy fix: Restrict semi's to the right lane at least until 90th street.

As a transplant from the East (New York, Boston, Washington), where there is much heavier traffic than in this area, I am amazed how long the 50s-era traffic engineering has held sway in the Metro. Unbelievable. Why the citizens put up with this, and why they've never learned how to drive properly (situational awareness, use of turn signals,, etc.), is beyond me.
