Every time I read anything these days relating to the DNR I am befuddled. We have 2 tiny herds of wild Elk. Our geniuses (that we pay with TAX dollars) think it's o.k. to kill about 25% of them! Headline- only 8 out of 23 elk hunters got an elk! Like that's a bad thing? Killing 25% of a miniscule wild herd, already allowed the SLAUGHTER of 25% of our (our I said, not the DNRs!) Wolves, cut in HALFthe walleyes that can be taken from Millelacs. Those greedy, small minded "professionals" can't count. We won't start with the moose issue. The DNR'S mission must be re-evaluated. The wildlife in Minnesota belongs to all of us, not just the minority that pay a few bucks to kill things. They need to get their priorities straightened out.

@basia2186 thanks for illuminating us with your views on how to properly manage wildlife. It sounds like you have a deep understanding of population dynamics, ecological systems and would be well suited to run the show. BTW, we don't "own" any population of wild animals, they are not ours. We just coexist.

somnliving, you beat me to it. Maybe the DNR, through its knowledge and research, has determined what they feel is an appropriate herd size given the food available, land to roam on, predation, etc. My guess is that they don't think the area can sustain elk herds in the hundreds...
