Letter #1--What you could also do is either you or your spouse explain to your in laws that your dad's behavior is not sanctioned by you; and that you apologize if it causes them any discomfort. I think if you knew that they knew you were not involved in any way, that you would feel better about it. Plus, sometimes something that is embarrassing loses it's power when it's out on the table and acknowledged by all parties.
