I would LOVE to dump cable (except for my internet connection.) Things like this will make it a reality. (Now if only I can convince my wife to give up the cable and TiVo.)

This was inevitable. The business model of buying content produced by someone else because you had a way to get it to the consumer worked until others figured ways to do the same. Now, there is so much competition for that content, it is becoming prohibitively expensive due to the bidding wars. Producing your own content is the answer, and effectively makes them into just another form of network. We think of the networks as ABC, CBS NBC, Fox, but A&E, USA, Lifetime, Hallmark, TNT, HBO, Showtime and I am sure many others are producing their own content. The question is how much can you expand the league before you run out of talent? Also, many of the venues like HBO use vulgarity, nudity, and gore to set their "dramas" apart. That may make for a hit amongst it's subscribers, but will they watch it again in reruns, because that content makes it unsellable to the general cable channels. Bill G.

I'm hoping that this starts a new modality for TV channels. I loathe paying for sports channels and would prefer an a la cart system where I only pay for the ones I want and not the mind-numbing dreck.

revrurik, ditto your comments. I am sadly disappointed that the cable/satellite industry has managed/mismanaged themselves into such a pathetically uninspiring product. In fact it is basically trash that is shamefully overpriced. Like yourself, I would love to see a system that charged a sum only for the channels each subscriber actually wanted to watch. Personally, I watch only about twelve channels. Most of the rest (reruns, sales channels, pseudo religious weirdness) is just a wasteland of nothingness. Time for something that is dramatically different in structure and content.
