I don't understand the GOP opposition to Hagel, a Republican combat veteran, over his predecessor, Panetta who, while an Army veteran (63-65), was neither a combat vet, nor a Republican. The fact that he uses his brain and speaks his mind is an asset, not a liability.

We should question our policy of giving blank checks to Israel's Likud government. We should question the need to spend 700 billion dollars a year on "defense", while second place China spends 90 billion, and the third and fourth place spenders are our NATO allies Britain and France. We should value a politician who questioned his party's leader over the Iraq debacle. We should understand why Iran may want nuclear weapons-recent history and our past policies explain a lot.

"Once the hearing was under way, the Republican National Committee put out a news release titled, "Chuck Hagel is the Wrong Choice for Secretary of Defense," and contending that he would weaken the nation's military." OOPS! Looks like the GOP just showed their hand. Another war? This time against Iran? They'll do anything to keep their killing machine in top form. Prepare for another $10 T in debt if they ever rise to power again.

Right, the Right Wing supports over-the-top maintenance of Israel with US taxpayer money. The Right Wing supports Israel, always ready to pounce on resistance. The Right Wing loves Israel... ready to bomb. The Right Wing Republicans protect Biblical doomsday in the Middle East. They long for the end times. They protect the path to end times. Israel doesn't care if American Right Wing Christians believe Jewish people are unqualified for the great trip to heaven. Wisely, Israel is happy to take the money instead of heaven.

Richard Nixon once said, "the problem with Republican's is that they eat their own young". I guess we're seeing that play out today.

John McCain...this is your former campaign chair, former good friend and treating him with no respect. McCain..you look like an aging, old fart again. Sad to see your bitter ending to a mostly stellar career.

@member23131; wait... do I long for the end of times? I'm conservative, but... I... don't... long for the end of times...? Surely your stereotype must be accurate, as all stereotypes are. It does a good job demonizing, another good thing to do in a blanket statement about a group of people.

John McCain has become just a cranky old man since he lost the presidency to Obama back in 2008. He never seems happy these days....always complaining about something. Time for him to go into the sunset and retire from the Senate. He's had his better days. I respect that he served our country and was a POW, but that doesn't give him the right to treat others with disrespect.

I am doubting that he can make the $10T mark in two terms, but in three he could go past that easily. Before you jump all over this comment as a 'conspiracy' item, he has shown that the Constitution and Ammendments are an impediment, not a roadblock.

McCain needs to retire and go spend some of his wifes money. He's probably got 5 or 6 homes that he hasn't visited in a while.
